Sirens of my Aniema

Sirens of My Anima is a project encompassing abstraction based on the female
form. The subjects are abstracted by simplifying the organic shapes of the
highlights and shadows from the photo references taken for the series. During the
process, the beginning shapes are laid in with acrylic paint. Pattern and texture
are then built up with oil paint and oil pastel with various mark-making and
stenciling on top of the acrylic base.
My thesis derives from my exploration of philosopher and psychologist C.G.
Jung’s idea of the Collective Unconscious, specifically his Anima archetype. Jung
believed that there is a woman in every man, the anima, and in every woman,
there is a man, the animus. I began a journey to explore my anima and how she
influences my psyche and tendencies in all aspects of my character. This
collection is a result of that exploration.
